It has been a resilient day for the markets . The AI and tech trade was under significant pressure at the open following sharp post-earnings pullbacks in Club stocks Broadcom and CrowdStrike . We thought both quarters were solid, but the upside on each was not enough to keep their parabolic rallies going. Money didn’t leave the market; it found other areas. As tech suffered, healthcare, financial, and communication services had strong sessions, supporting a big rally in the Dow Jones Industrial Average . During the session, investors realized that what happened to Broadcom and CrowdStrike was not a change in their long-term growth stories. Instead, it was a matter of expectations getting ahead of fundamentals . As those expectations reset and the market got more comfortable that the theses were unchanged, both stocks and the broader AI group rebounded some from their earlier lows, pushing the S & P 500 firmly into the green. Even the tech-heavy Nasdaq made it into positive territory. Costco delivered another strong month of sales . U.S. comparable sales increased 8.7% in May, reaching their highest levels in over a year. A great showing in sales was driven by 3.7% growth in traffic, a robust acceleration from the trailing 12-month average of 2.8%. Costco has been a beneficiary of higher gasoline prices as consumers flock to the membership-only retailer to save up to 20 to 30 cents per gallon, which translates to hefty savings in this inflationary economy. It also attracts more in-store visitors, naturally bolstering sales. The Club stock was up 2% on the week, clawing back about half of Friday’s post-earnings pullback . Earnings are light for the rest of the week . Lululemon and DocuSign are out with their quarters after Thursday’s closing bell. While there are no major earnings reports before the bell, get ready for jobs Friday. The government’s employment report is out at 8:30 a.m. ET. The economy is expected to have added 105,000 jobs in May, according to FactSet. It would mark the third straight month of gains. The nation’s unemployment rate is expected to be unchanged at 4.3%.
