Actor and comedian Amy Schumer doesn’t joke about endometriosis. In an interview with Time magazine, she shared that she was 10 years old when the pain of her period overwhelmed her. She’d seen her mother suffer from extreme cramps before, and she assumed it was just a normal part of womanhood.
“I was immediately in this grotesque pain and was just leveled — just barreled over, like someone was squeezing me tight from the inside,” Schumer said. “I just thought, ‘It’s my turn.’”
It wasn’t until 2019, when she had a C-section delivering her son, Gene, that the surgeon found 33 endometriosis lesions inside her abdomen. “It felt really good to be there with my partner to say, ‘This isn’t me being lazy. This isn’t me being dramatic,’” Schumer says. “‘I have a real disease.’”
