How Salmonella Can Make You Sick
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Infections can be serious and potentially fatal for vulnerable groups, including young children, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms of salmonella infection can start anywhere from six hours to six days after a person eats contaminated food. These symptoms include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Diarrhea (which may be bloody)
- Stomach cramps
- Nausea and vomiting
Food poisoning caused by salmonella usually lasts four to seven days. Dehydration is the biggest concern; drink plenty of clear fluids while you recover.
In severe cases, infection can spread from the intestines to the blood, which could lead to life-threatening complications without prompt treatment.
Most cases of salmonella poisoning get better on their own, but if you belong to a vulnerable group, or if your symptoms are severe, you should seek medical care.
