Ultraprocessed Meats (but Not Grains or Dairy) Tied to Higher Colorectal Cancer Risk

A growing body of research has tied higher consumption of ultra-processed foods to a higher risk of numerous chronic health issues. New findings, however, suggest that some of these foods may be more unhealthy than others when it comes to colorectal cancer risk.

A study involving more than 400,000 older Americans found that rates of colorectal cancer were highest among adults who ate the most ultra-processed meats. On the other hand, whole grains, fiber, dairy products, and calcium from ultra-processed sources appeared to lower colorectal cancer risk.

For Heather Yeo, MD, a colon and rectal surgeon and an oncologist at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian in New York City, the analysis underscores that not all ultra-processed foods are created equal.

“The type and nutritional quality of food may matter more for colorectal cancer risk than the processing label alone,” says Dr. Yeo, who was not involved in the research. “This study adds nuance to previous research by examining specific food groups and nutrients rather than treating ultra-processed foods as one uniform category.”
